How can you avoid wrecking your truck?

Every trucker is (or should be) safety conscious. Your job and your life depend on making it to and from your destination in one piece every time.

Surprisingly, it's often the little things that you can do that make the difference between whether you end up in an accident or not.

Here are some tips that may help.

1. Stay off rural roads.

If you're tempted to take a rural route because of the scenery or because you just want to skip around a section of workday city traffic, you should reconsider. At least 64 percent of truck accidents happen in rural areas, compared to only 5 percent on the interstate.

2. Avoid drugs and alcohol.

Do you want to really reduce your chances of a wreck? You probably already know that you can't use illegal drugs or alcohol while driving and still be safe.

However, you may not realize that over-the-counter medication and prescription drugs are two of the biggest hazards to drivers. Over-the-counter medications, like Benadryl or other allergy and cold medication, can cause a driver to get sleepy and crash. They account for 17 percent of commercial truck accidents.

Prescription drugs are even more dangerous. Their side-effects account for another 26 percent of semi-truck accidents.

Avoid all four kinds of substances and you reduce your chances of being in an accident almost by half.

3. Realize how much control you have.

It may be hard to admit, but driver error is the biggest factor when it comes to truck accidents. You have a tremendous amount of control over whether you crash or not. To be safest, avoid speeding, driving while fatigued and driving in a vehicle that you haven't personally inspected for safety. If your equipment fails while you're in motion, there's little you can do to prevent a wreck.

It's important for anybody who is injured in a truck accident that isn't their fault to fully explore their legal options for compensation.
